Gustav Klimt (1862 – 1918) was a brilliant Austrian iconoclast who rose from childhood impoverishment to become an artist who enormously impacted the Viennese Secession and Art Nouveau movement. Known for elaborate, explicitly sensual paintings and murals, Klimt’s works also encompass themes of regeneration, love and death. Embedding his work with images symbolizing the freedom of art from traditional Western culture, Klimt’s eclectic range of influences included Egyptian, Classical Greek, Byzantine and Medieval styles. A forerunner of Modernism and the Art Deco movements, Klimt’s huge creative influence still resonates in modern art, decorations and jewelry.

Katsushika Hokusai (1760 – 1849) dominated Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock printing, meaning “pictures of the floating world,” or everyday life. Hokusai, who changed his name each time he changed artistic styles, is best known for his woodblock print series “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji,” which includes the iconic “The Great Wave Off Kanagawa.” He was extraordinarily prolific between 1796 and 1820, producing an estimated 30,000 book illustrations and color prints inspired by Japanese traditions, legends and daily life. Hokusai created his most important works after age 60, in which Mount Fuji was often a spiritually significant element. His art enormously impacted Impressionists, including Claude Monet, Edgar Degas and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec.

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), a twentieth century Grand Master who co-founded Cubism, was only 20 years old when his friend’s tragic death resulted in the subdued “Blue Nude. His “Blue Period” artworks, rendered in somber blues and greens, were part of an astounding 20,000 paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures he produced in his lifetime. Hauntingly beautiful and exquisitely composed, “Blue Nude” is one of Picasso’s best-selling pieces, and a testament to his ability to express complex emotions with one simple shade.

Vincent Van Gogh (1853 – 1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist Master whose innovative artwork powerfully influenced modern Expressionism, Fauvism, and early abstraction. Astoundingly prolific, Van Gogh produced all of his work during a 10-year period, at one point, creating 150 paintings and drawings within one year. Painting outdoors, Van Gogh uniquely captured the nighttime nuances of light and shadow, and was also renowned for his paintings of sunflowers and irises. Tormented by mental illness for most of his life, Van Gogh created many of his masterpieces while he was institutionalized. Although Van Gogh only sold one painting during his lifetime, he is now regarded as one of the most profoundly influential artists of the 19th century.

Claude Monet’s art is much lauded as the epitome of Impressionism. Frustrated with the restrictions of traditional art, Monet (1840-1925) moved to Paris in 1859. There he, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Camille Pissaro laid the foundations for Impressionism, often painting outdoors. Monet’s soothingly tranquil series of water lilies continues to powerfully influence abstract artists and capture the essence of atmospheric beauty.

“Starry Night” hauntingly expresses, through swirling brushstrokes, vivid colors and distorted forms, the artistic brilliance of Dutch Grand Master Vincent Van Gogh (1853 – 1890). A post-Impressionist artist who powerfully influenced modern Expressionism, Fauvism and early abstraction, Van Gogh was a prolific artist who produced all of his work during a 10-year period—at one point, creating an astounding 150 paintings and drawings within one year. Now an icon, he only sold one painting in his lifetime. “Starry Night,” his most famous piece, was created completely from memory while Van Gogh was institutionalized and currently hangs in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
“I often think the night is more alive and richly colored than the day.”
- Vincent Van Gogh

Claude Monet (1840 – 1925), the founder of Impressionism, was one of the most influential landscape painters in the history of art. Born in Paris, Monet was enrolled in the studio of Glenyre, where he met Renoir, Sisley, and Bazille, who became the core of the Impressionist group. Painting outdoors, he broke the tradition of portraying a subject literally by conveying the fleeting effects of atmosphere, time of day, and season upon color and light. Eliminating black and gray from his palette, he represented natural color like a prism, breaking it down into its individual components, often painting a series of the exact same view under different light and weather conditions. Monet brought the study of the transient effects of natural light to its most refined expression, ultimately becoming a forerunner of 20th century modernism.

Wassily Kandinsky (1886-1944), considered to be the 20th Century peer of Picasso and Matisse, believed that art is music for the soul, and that it could visually express musical compositions. He was profoundly impacted by the glistening colors of buildings in his native Russia, and he is credited with painting the first modern abstracts. “Farbstudie Quadrate,” with its rhythm of colors and shapes, is music to the eyes of children, aspiring artists and anyone who wants to grace their home with a visual symphony.

Although it was originally scorned, Georges Seurat’s “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” was a scientific triumph and his most renowned masterpiece. Creating a groundbreaking but incredibly time intensive style called Pointillism, Seurat (1859 – 1891), a neo-Impressionist leader, rejected broad brushstrokes of mixed color, substituting tiny points of pure color which the observer’s eye blended in to images. Utilizing elaborate, scientifically devised linear structures and geometric order for compositional unity, the enormous canvas of “La Grande Jatte,” which contains more than 40 figures and their surroundings, took Seurat almost two years to complete.

“Irises, Saint-Remy, 1889,” by post-Impressionist Grand Master Vincent Van Gogh (1853 – 1890), depicts the garden of the hospital where he was a recuperating, and was painted a few months before he died. Suffering from depression for most of his life, Van Gogh called this painting “the lightning conductor for my illness,” because he felt he could keep himself well by continuing to paint. The work was influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints, containing strong outlines, unusual angles, and non-literal coloring. Although Van Gogh only sold one painting in his lifetime, “Irises, Saint-Remy” was sold for $49 million in 1987, setting a world record.

Edvard Munch (1863 – 1944) was a Norwegian artist whose haunting paintings reflected the anguish of his own troubled life. Painting in Paris and Berlin for 20 years, Munch was inspired by Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, before shifting to his deeply personal style filled with troubling scenes of illness and death. His tortured imagery was influenced by the deaths of his parents and sister before he was 25, and the commitment of his other sister to an asylum shortly thereafter. During an exhibition in Berlin, his disturbing work generated such controversy that authorities closed the show. Munch strongly believed that his suffering was integral to his art, and created a huge body of work that powerfully influenced modern graphic art.
